getting a personal tone out of one, jus sayin
You certainly can have your opinion, but the whole PRS being a "homogenized sound is a cliche. You can get whatever tone you want out of one. Yes, certain PRS guitars with certain pickups became associated with a certain style of music played by guys getting the same sound to sell records, but they could've used any guitar to get there. Also the fact that PRS has numerous types of pickups to choose from now makes that type of mindset even less valid. It's like saying Mesa Rectifiers can only get one sound. Once again associated with the same music, but the amps were capable of much more. Hell, I'm pretty sure I saw Lindsey Buckingham playing through a pair of Dual Rectifiers for some of his sound. I used them for fusion type playing at one time.
More importantly, for the money you'll have a hard time finding a better guitar company.
I saw Carlos a few years back. It was a decent show, but toward the end of the show we got a little tired of hearing him drag out the solos so much. We had the option of hearing Carlos hang on the same note over and over, or beat the traffic out of the arena. We skeedaddled. I would say he has been an influence of mine though. Liked the Supernatural album.
It's amazing what you can do with a computer and too much time. To wit and TOTALLY off topic, here's one of my favorite examples of computer aided character murder.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFB6LQ1-WKU

I have always loved Santana's style. Still do. He has written and played some of the most melodic instrumental guitar songs and I thank him for that. He is an old gentleman now and has reinvented himself more than once. We should all learn something from that. He also makes a lot more money than any of us playing his guitar. He made more $ playing Leno than I make all year gigging quite a bit. He has earned the right to go for it.
BTW I take a PRS to most gigs. I get lots of different tones from it. It is why I take it. It is also a playing sob. I think the secret is to get the very hot pickups out that some come with. Use Mccarty's or something with low output for a sweeter tone.
I saw Jimmy Page all coked up with The Firm. Awful if you ever heard Zeppelin IV.
We all kind of end up mocking ourselves.
I saw Aretha Franklin sing Respect a few years back. If she had any respect, she would have stopped singing it around 1986. (bless her little heart and all that)
2 stages of mega-stardom. You do it because you are a badass, and after that you are in a cover band for the rest of your life trying to channel that badass. The only person that doesn't suffer this condition is Jeff Beck.
Jeff Beck. You baddass. Play on, geezer. Rock.
Signatures have a 255 character limit that I could abuse, but I am not Cecil B. DeMille.

(I wasn't sure whether putting a -1000 would negate Sky's post or add another 1000 to his negation of the previous +100. Bottom line: I like what Jeff Beck has been doing in recent years.)
