Anybody Else Want A Jim Kelley Amp?

Post by Blackburn »

I do. I really, really like the new look. :D

I saw a schem on the Kelley site that looked pretty interesting. Some stuff I've never seen elsewhere. Think they'll be worth the eventual used price? I'm thinking between $2500 and $3K.

I will always love those and I will never play through another one as long as I live!

Just wait for the usual TGP hype to sweep the grounds. I'm sure you will find one for a good price eventually.

Yeah I think so too. This is one of the few new amps I'd actually buy, used of course.

If I'm lucky, around 2K. :)

I asked John S about one back in Feb of last year, they aren't cheap.

Going for $4K new! Crazy, but compared to the competition, really not as bad as you'd expect because I think this thing really can be the end all be all for many. The clips are great! Cleans chime, have punch and the grind, oh the grind...That's not even mentioning cosmetics... I want!

I played through those things in the early 80s and glad you like 'em!

I have a friend who has an old 30/60 head (80s) he would consider selling. He recently had it brought back to new condition by Jim Kelley.
I played in a band with this guy for more than a decade, and with his '50s Strat, and the Kelley, it remains one of the best sounding rigs I have ever heard. It's a hard amp to get the hang of, but this guy was a great rock guitar player and could make it sing (not the case in my hands).
We fired it back up for a jam about a year ago. It was way to loud to get even close to (the attenuator wasn't working properly). I can't believe we used to play at that deafening volume. Awesome amp though. Unbelievable tone.

They all sounded really different because each one has something else really wrong with it. lol

It is my hope that you're simply referring to the state of repair of your equipment at the time. Because otherwise, the implication here is neither fair nor accurate, in general. The experience you describe is not typical of these amps. While it may be true that no two amps sound exactly alike, it is simply incorrect to characterize the amps as having something wrong with them. I have seen a number of them that have been butchered with well-intentioned but ill-advised modifications over the years, and perhaps that is what you're referring to, but it is ludicrous to saddle the brand with this kind of generalized, reckless portrayal. People here respect what you have to say. Please justify your comments.

With thanks and regards,

Jim,

I think everyone here realizes Miles was stating his opinion. We've got a smart bunch of folks here.

Yes they were in poor repair. The good one was always missing, I liked it with a 335. An amp with it's own voice, for sure.

:)

and with luck this will post this time
