How does the ug30 differ from other vox inspired amps? And how does it compare vs the rocket or Liverpool?

the basic gain stage/p.i. pre is the same as a regular ac30 topboost. the reverb is the standard fender standalone type wedged in from the front end, using an el84 (instead of 6v6/6k6) to drive the tank. in terms of topography, not sure how/where it's combined back in with the dry signal. also looks like he combined the mix and the vol on the dual pot. if you have access to the amp you should suss out the circuit----really all that's needed is the front end and where/how the reverb ties back in to the dry. all the rest is pretty much known.

IIRC the UG30 (i owned a UG30 prototype in the early 90's) was a tweed pro pre mated to an AC30 power section. The reverb is supposedly the fender standalone on the front end. The UG30 I owned was supposedly one of the test bench amps Bruno used to develop the reverb model. Mine had a tube driven effects loop instead of the reverb. Wish i had that one back. It is one of only three pieces i have sold over the years that i wish i had back. The other two being a 70 LP Deluxe and a 71 super reverb

I made the mistake of buying one of these a few years ago. I was not blown away and it's been sitting in the basement of my store ever since. It's on my list of amps to trace and make a schematic for. Also some dumb ass modded the polarity switch into a half power switch and I think they didn't switch the cathode resistor for half power ? It's been awhile, someday I'll get inside of it and put it back to stock so I can unload it. Seems they are coming back up in price finally.
So to maybe answer your question, I thought is was an AC30 top boost with a Fender reverb in front which would make it more of a Rocket type amp but with verb.
However I could be wrong, someday I'll find out.

yes you should open it up and at least see how he marries the reverb section into the pre. that's about all you need since the rest looks to be just the stock 2 circuits. looks like in the amp now he adds the extra knob for the mix instead of using a dual pot and sticking it with the vol. rhrandalp3000 wrote:I made the mistake of buying one of these a few years ago. Re: The underground 30 is different how? Gut pics inside.
Is it really the same as a Rocket just with reverb? I know that would be its closest TW amp but what is the difference? The circuit looks a lot more complex?
I am trying to look at the UG30 vs Rocket vs my ac30cc2x. I compared a Liverpool I had to the ac30 and I liked the ac30 more. But I don't want overlap with my ac30.

Look at the Vibroking Manual attached Revision A. It wouldn't surprise me if he lifted the whole interface from here.

And looking at the pictures he is using a double gang volume pot and linking the two channels together. I bet this thing is pretty ballsy

Doesnt a dual gang volume pot just control 2 channels? Isnt this a 1 channel amp? How does this work?

Hmmmm...I think "mistake" is a strong word. If you dont like the amp, fine...sell it. I love mine but have to sell it for economic reasons. If I could afford to keep I wouldnt think of selling it. It probably has the best clean and "on the brink" tones I ever heard. I think in all my years of playing I've tried just about evrything out there from Ampegs to Simms-Watts and back. I have the advantage of having both Tony Bruno and Andy Fuchs as personal close freinds...and they come from very different places with their amps.( there are a couple of exceptions). Andy's cleans are also more of the Dumble school(Fender derivative) and Tony comes from a love of British(Vox and Marshall). All I'm trying to say is that it serves nothing to be derogatory about somone's life work. You are of course entitled to like whatever you want..but sometimes I think forum users are a bit over the top when it comes to how they voice their opinion.

I think mistake is spot on when you spend that kind of money for an amp and are very disappointed and also find out someone monkeyed with it.
I'm sorry I offended you and I'm also sorry you have to part with yours since you seem to really like it.
I hope you do well with your sale and wish you the best.

You seem to be having trouble with the quote function. You can always manually insert the HTML tags {quote="person"}{/quote} (using [] instead of {}) if that works better for you.
I think RandalP3000 articulately described his unique situation. His amp had been messed with, and he stated that explicitly. Thus, his opinion will vary from that of another person with an unmolested amp. He characterizes that acquisition as a "mistake", and I think there's no mistaking his sentiment. Had it been me, I would also initially regard such an acquisition as a mistake. Then I'd like to think I would arrive at the headspace he is in: hope for a future where he can restore the amp to proper function and create a proper schematic for it. I don't see anything the least bit negative or derogatory in his post, certainly not "over the top" in voicing opinion.
Re: The underground 30 is different how? Gut pics inside.
I say the same thing about my Reverb Rocket the best sounding amp and I have gigged with it for years.
Not hard to get a great reverb into a chimey EL84 power stage or Octal power section.
Cost $800
Can't knock the Amp Garage builders for what we do, build our own amps that's why we are here to learn and share. Of course we will have our own opinions.

Your experience is your reality, no need to be PC about it. We all at one time have purchased gear that was in our opinion a mistake in hindsight.randalp3000 wrote:I think mistake is spot on when you spend that kind of money for an amp and are very disappointed and also find out someone monkeyed with it.

What's next here, you voice your opinion about your own experience with certain gear and become censured for brand bullying? Sounds like TGP.
