Source For Good, Noiseless Octals, SL,SJ,SC,SNs

Post by zozoe »

Hi all, I've just been thru a nightmare returning 2 JAN Glass 6SJ7s, that the seller claimed to measure well, but the were noisy & whistled for days. Is there any course that can provide 'real world' testing in a circuit & guarantee a tube free of microphonics that I won't need to return? It's the 1st preamp tube in the amp, & it needs to be solid & I need 2. Tapping it in a circuit is the only way to tell.
Many thanks in advance.

You might try Tubes and more/ Antique electronics, the have the industrial 5963 versions for 18 bucks and I think they can test it for you.

SND tubes maybe able to help you also.

Kevin Deal at Upscale Audio does good testing of tubes. I don't know if he has any 6J etc. tubes though. Give him a call.

All of the glass 6sj7 I've tried we're noisy, had better luck with metal tubes.

Do you need it to just work right, or must it also look perfect inside the cabinet?

You COULD take dead octal tubes and break away the glass, then solder another tube's pins to the octal socket, getting a quiet tube on an octal socket.

Just sayin'...
