Which ODS has better cleans?
Which of the dumble ods amp has better cleans for strat guitars? Leaning towards to a fendery blackface cleans. I want to build a 50watt ods or 20watt ods just for personal use.
I want to build ods and not fender because ods are more versatile amp in my opinion.

Re: Which ODS has better cleans?
ODS imo all have great cleans. If you want super clean, though, I'd go for a SSS instead...
If you want both clean and drive... Then you should listen to a few of the players of known dumbles and decide which one you like better... it's a complex decision...

Thanks Phil. Maybe i should try the dumble 183. I like John Mayer cleans and i know that SSS is much more harder and expensive to make than ods. So I'll go with ODS.

Re: Which ODS has better cleans?
with a strat the 100w Bluesmaster ODS without a doubt.
Stick the FET on a relay/footswitch as a clean boost or plug into the FET channel and you have a sparkly strat sound to die for

Going by the layouts in the file section here is a quick down and dirty more notable things I notice
The closest you will get to an AB-76 Blackface Clean sound and feel would be a Low Plate Classic (wDeep switch)
This will give you that classic scooped low plate 100k slope .047 mid cap Fender tone
If you want more mids (500Hz)push I would go Low Plate Skyliner (124)
High Plate Skyliners 102/183 amps seem to have a flatter Treble control heavier bass response and different gain structure and so it will sound and feel different than your Typical Blackface Fender. 183 has has a more Marshall style output section..
I do however prefer the OD of a high plate w/ thicker mids but this is personal
The 2nd and 3rd Gen amps are also Fender like but are again more mid heavy (.01 Mid cap /250k Mid pot) and a bit more raw sounding OD.
A few other thoughts would be to put the NFB on V1 on a switch to disengage it, if it gets in your way and remember your tone will change given your parts selection so there is always that>
BTW. Which is Better?...All the amps listed are legit and are designed for different sounds and applications or guitars. The 102 amp is popular amp here and a bit more forgiving but doesn't really remind me of a typical Fender BF type amp (like a Classic) Classics are are also a trickier build. So without really knowing you it's impossible to say??

Agree that the classic stack is a good match for a strat. Curious why you feel that 183s output is more Marshall like? It is straight up Dumble style with EL34. The Bluesmasters have the more grindy output.

Yep!.. I was thinking both the 34's and Marshall Style (Pacific) output transformer.PI is Typical..
The Bluesmaster has the Marshall style PI with the lower 9K tail and 470/511 cathode (Hotter & less balanced) that contributes to the added heat and grind of the BM.

So the Bluesmaster has sparkly cleans AND an OD that sounds like a Marshall?

Thank you Tony for a detailed response and sharing your experience regarding D amps. I'm currently checking on 124 clips on YouTube.talbany wrote: ↑Fri Oct 09, 2020 9:50 am Going by the layouts in the file section here is a quick down and dirty more notable things I notice

Yes! The cleans are very -JTM-Esque The same basic Tone stack (without the follower) and hotter PI (less GNFB)..The Cleans don't have quite the sparkle (due to higher plates) vs a Low plate however the difference is rather small IMO

Re: Which ODS has better cleans?
Sidetrack question. Does dumblator adds gain and color to the sound? Planning to add that in my build. Thank you.

Re: Which ODS has better cleans?
I've already read tony's post regarding dumblator. My question is already answered there.

Re: Which ODS has better cleans?
If I may, I would like to suggest one other circuit. The high plate classic. It doesn't have quite the extended top end that the low plate has but I think it is really a unique cool sounding amp with a strat. The problem with comparing Dumble circuits to a Fender Blackface is the scooped mids of the Fender just doesn't work with an amp that needs some mid push for the overdrive. I found that as soon as I stopped comparing the Dumble amps to a Fender and got into the mid thing, things got easier.

You want that knee shifted lower to the upper mids in OD giving those amps that famous Sax like chirp attack sound they are known for. The High Plate sound
