Low-plate Skyline

Post by ijedouglas »

I decided to build an ODS that had some of my favorite pieces and take a little from a few different serials. It mostly resembles #0124 but I wanted to try use some of the older Tandy RG-59 as seen in #0102. I think the Tandy would have been great but I ended up using some vintage Columbia coax which sounds great. I fired it up tonight and without much tweaking it sounds pretty good. The cleans are clear, full and have a beautiful sing on the top-end. I didn't get a chance to really crank the OD but the little I heard sounded pretty good. I'll report back tomorrow if I get a chance to crank it in between building the cab.

Incredible work as always Ian! I see you even got the red tantalum caps on the fet board. Is the skyline your favorite tone stack?

Thanks all. Didn't get any time today to play with the amp as I was struggling with the cab... I'm no carpenter and half-blind dovetail joints are a PITA

Beautiful job Ian. Did you start with the Tandy coax and then change to the Columbia because it sounded better? If so, what difference did you hear?

Thanks Mike. I didn't try the Tandy. I found the Columbia and decided to give it a whirl 8)

It’s a beauty for sure, Ian! ‘80’s time capsule, and HAD construction technique showcase.

Question, have you measured capacitance/ft on those old coax types? Is the type number known?

Looks fantastic! I bet it sounds just as awesome too!
What type of speakers are you going to pair it with?
