Music Electronics Forum and the Wayback Machine?

Post by R.G. »

I tried poking around on the Wayback Machine for a while, found the structure of the forum (i.e. links to the content) but no actual content.

Do any of you know how much, if any, of the content got preserved on Wayback?

You would think that someone from that forum who was in contact with Tboy (I think Chuck H was) should be able to find a way to get access to the servers and grab all the data if Tboy didn't want to or can't maintain or operate the site anymore. Of course that assumes that he or his family is responsive to that. Jason (Nosaj) was doing something with maintaining the site previously, and last I heard there were some updates that didn't work correctly or something along those lines and he was going to look into it, but he's also going to college so he's likely very busy. I don't have contact info for any of those folks but hopefully someone can figure it out. That site had decades of some very great information for the community!

I'd happily volunteer my time getting that forum/db back up and running if the opportunity arose - it just sounded like the communication with the former maintainer kind of went cold after a while. There's so much info there that I want to preserve - not just for myself, but as a collective of great shared knowledge for people to have down the road.

I believe the issue with Wayback Machine is in the way the forum churns out references to content in the DB with the url, instead of assigning url slugs to posts - Wayback Machine doesn't have anything to grab onto in order to archive.

Has anyone been able to reach out to Jason (nosaj) as he was the last one the appeared to be maintaining the site? I think Chuck H was the one who initially was able to get hold of TBoy after his medical situation. I don't know to get hold of either one, and didn't have a way to get hold of Tboy except through the site.

I have Jason's address in Florida that I got when I sent him some money. I sent him a letter, I think in January asking him to reach out and get help with any difficulties he may be having. I got no response.

I hope those guys are OK, even beyond the forum stuff.

In my dotage I'm getting acutely aware of how fragile even the toughest, strongest of us can be.

Well maybe he's just buried with school? Hard to know without communication. I lost any communication links to Chuck H when the MEF went down. I know he's in the PACNW in WA state somewhere, but aside from that I have no idea. I think he was the one that was able to get in touch with Tboy initially when Tboy had his medical issues occur. I haven't seen him on any other sites like MEF2 or here, or Hoffman. I hope all of them are ok! Hopefully over time all of us in the community can figure out how to get the data that was on Tboy's servers backed up somewhere.

Should I start knocking on some doors? It's a pretty small amp community up here...

Do you know where Chuck H lives? I seem to remember it was somewhere up towards Bremerton, or Port Orchard, but he could have been up near Port Townsend for all I know. My communication with him on that was on the MEF forum's private messages so it is lost too.

I'm down in the Portland area of Oregon.

You've got Mike Soldano up there, and Andy Marshall too. Pretty successful amp community up in WA.

I don't know him, but may ask around to see if anyone I know in the music/amp community does. For amp builders and repair techs it is a relatively small group of people outside of the big names everyone knows.

I am up north of Seattle by about an hour.

You're up a little further than my friend Wolfe from Wolfetone pickups. He's just north of Seattle.

Hopefully we're able to find everyone needed and we can get all the MEF data saved somewhere to make it available for everyone again.

Oh man, I really miss those dudes. I really miss the forum too! I realize that I took the sites administration for granted, even though I donated. It was unthinkable that it would just be gone. That forum, as well as AX84 in the beginning was the place I learned what I needed to learn.
There were members who I trusted and counted on to correct me if I got it wrong or was on the right track.

This is Daniel "tdlunsfo", the new MEF2 site admin. I would love any help or info on getting the old site back up and running, or at least combined with the new one.
