Kleinulator Mods = Closer to compressed D-lator sound??

Post by bluesfendermanblues »

Dear all,

I'd like to hear your comments to the following mods done on Michael W. Kliens 'Kleinulator'.

- bridged/removed the 33k input 'grit resistor on FET1
- removed the input 220p cap on FET1

- bridged the 100k input 'grid' resistor on FET2 with a 1.1n cap. = D'lator HP freq (1446 HZ)
- Added the LNF circuit, (10M+220n+10M) on FET2
- Changed the 1M input-to-ground resistor, on FET2, from to 220K

Using the Kelin i series, with a couple of pedals - a T-REX 'roommate' and T-REX 'replica'. I sounds nice and compresses nicely - even with the pedals off.

Settings
- both bright-switches off
- 'Mix' at 5 o'clock
- 'Send' at 12 0'clock
- 'Return' at 12 o'clock

Pedals adjustet to unity gain.

Since, I don't have a dumblator, it would be interesting if someone with both the klein and a d'lator clone, tried the mods on their clone and reported back about how the sounds compare. Due to the compression added by the mods, I have a feeling that its pretty close.

Klein used to post over at the Brown Note forum.
He was there when he came up with his loop.

But, I haven't seen him post in quite a while so I don't know what's become of him.

I need to try that circuit out for sure.

Did you follow the Ceriatone layout or another one?

I followed the layout at the borwnnote forum - 'Version 5', I think.

Thanks
I have a few different layouts of that circuit.
So you have not had an opportunity to compare the Kleinulator to the Dumbleator?

Anybody?

So you used the Rev 5 layout, is this it?

I think I can recall Klein built a D-Lator when Brandon first posted his tutorial. I don't think he stated a preference toward one or the other.

The problem with the Solid state device is in the available voltage, ie, it clips because a 9v supply doesn't have enough of a swing to take the input voltage from the Preamp (capable of 200V), SO, at low level playing that two are virtually identical sound wise, but if you get it up to Gig levels the Solid state unit clips. You can sort of accomodate this with a 36v supply, but it will still clip on the clean side if you are playing kind of loud.

So it should be possible, since the BF245a can take +/-30VDC drain/source? given the other components - eletrolytic cap - can take voltage.

High Voltage Kleinulator

Post by ToneMerc »

Here's one I built this week, about 36V from a 10.5V source. It didn't dawn on me until after I laid it out and punched holes that I could have easily made it up to around 42V....oh well.

Thanks, but that explains a lot.....

The Ceriatone version uses the mods suggested above and use a higher voltage (36 volts) a suggested by Brandon.

What's that ic above the zener on your layout? Where do I get one?
thanks

Is that the same with a tube version? That would mean the Fuchs Verbrator clips as well?
