Hello,
My cheap variac is terrible and looking to get a U.S. made one. Is the Weschler one any good. I think I can get a refurbished one for not crazy money.

If you have time to shop, make up a list of acceptable models, then haunt facebook marketplace, craigslist, etc. for some good bargains.
I got my variac (Variac brand, even!), rated at 10A, for $40 at a surplus place. Just took some waiting. Sheer luck, and knowing ahead of time what would be good.

I have a B&K 1655A unit that includes a meter, a safety-current-leakage detector and even a separately controlled outlet for a soldering iron, that I use with my thermal wire strippers.
Long discontinued, but really nice and you can find them on eBay and the like.

That's a good brand.mrfreddieboy wrote: ↑Fri Oct 09, 2026 1:52 pm My cheap variac is terrible and looking to get a U.S. made one. Is the Weschler one any good. I think I can get a refurbished one for not crazy money.
I have a 10 amp Superior Powerstat 3PN116C Autotransformer made in USA. Very good quality. Plenty available on eBay. Expect to pay $100 to $150 for a good one. Powerstat is used by the military, FAA, and lots of industry. I highly recommend Powerstat.
